how to participate
Designer, would you like to participate in the competition? Request the competition materials via email (participation is free). Send a message with ‘YFD X LM competition materials’ to heidi.huovinen@youngfinnishdesign.com, and you will receive the PDF file in your inbox within 24 hours.

Who can participate in the competition?
The competition is aimed at designers in the early stages of their careers, regardless of age, who have graduated within the last 15 years. Finnish designers, design students in Finland, or those who have already graduated can participate in the competition.
In the competition, two main prizes are awarded, with a total value of €3000.
Selection criteria: Lanka and Muovi are responsible for selecting the finalists and will also choose the jury, which will choose the winners.
The awarded competition entries must demonstrate high-level design expertise. The evaluation will emphasize functionality, aesthetics, innovation, user-friendliness, and commercial potential.

Each of our products carries a story – a story of Finnish perseverance, ingenuity, and determination. This story begins with strong and durable steel, whose journey stretches from deep within the earth all the way to Niittymaa in Pori. When you hold our finished product in your hands, you are also holding a piece of Finnish tradition and expertise – something that is made to endure both time and the challenges of everyday life. We don’t just make products; we create order and clarity, so you can focus on what matters most in life.
The wire travels a long way, but eventually, it finds its place – exactly where it’s needed. In this way, steel wire is no longer just a material; it weaves its own story, connecting the past, the present, and the future.

Q&A
I want to participate with multiple competition entries. Can I use the same nickname for all my submissions?
Yes, you can use the same nickname.
Does participating in the competition give permission to publish the competition entry online or elsewhere?
Publication of the works will be agreed upon separately with the winners and those who participated in the competition.
Can I publish my competition entry in my portfolio before the competition results are announced?
No, you cannot. The works must be unpublished if Lanka ja Muovi wants to commercialize them.
Who can participate?
You can participate if you have a degree or are studying:
Design: products, furniture, services, ceramics, packaging, glass, industrial design...
Fashion and/or textile design, weaving
Architecture + Interior Design
Graphic design
You can participate if your graduation was within the last 15 years.

Can I participate with more than one proposal?
Yes, you can. Please remember to submit all proposals in the same PDF presentation, but clearly separate each proposal with its own title page.

How are the post-competition rights for proposals handled? Does the designer give up their commercial rights if their proposal doesn’t win?
The designer does not give up their intellectual property rights or commercial rights if they do not win the competition. Once the winners are announced, separate collaboration agreements will be made between the designer and the company.
Help! My email is not working at a critical moment, and I can't submit my competition proposal! What should I do?
Let us know at heidi.huovinen@youngfinnishdesign.com and send your proposal as soon as possible the following day.
Does the competition entry have to be designed specifically for this competition? Can I use a school project or an idea I originally designed for myself? Does it matter if the proposal has been visible on social media or elsewhere?
The proposals must be designed specifically for Lanka ja Muovi. Proposals must not have been previously published anywhere (not even on personal social media), and they should not have been included in another company's product range or been sold before. You can participate with ideas that you have previously designed (such as school projects or personal designs), but please carefully consider if the idea fits Lanka ja Muovi's range and the brief of this competition.
Is it possible to get materials from Lanka ja Muovi for the competition?
Unfortunately, no.
Why is a design education required to participate?
The YFD X LM competition is open to designers with formal design education, both graduates and students.
We make this distinction because we organize competitions for designers with design education, and this is one of the principles of our work, supporting our mission to help emerging designers advance in their careers.
Can architects participate?
Yes.
How do I name the PDF file?
nickname_a - no last page and contact information
nickname_b - last page with contact information
Can the file size exceed 10MB? What if I submit multiple proposals in the same entry, can the file size exceed in that case?
No, if the file is too large, we will ask the designer to reduce the file size anyway.
