The Starting Point
What could a new Finnish wallpaper classic look like?
Sandudd set out to discover a new pattern collection for its upcoming Finnish Design range, continuing the legacy of its historic collection first launched in 1959. The challenge was to bring together Sandudd’s rich heritage and the vision of a new generation of designers.

What Did We Do?
As part of the YFD design competition, three young designers developed a new wallpaper pattern collection for Sandudd.
The selected designers were Riina Heinonen, a Fashion, Clothing and Textile Design specialist; Heini Turunen, a visual artist and pattern designer; and Hanna Halme, an illustrator and graphic designer.
The designers were challenged to create at least three coordinated patterns: a bold statement design, a lighter variation derived from it, and a minimalist pattern that works almost like a solid-colour wall surface.

Three FRESH Perspectives
Riina Heinonen – Winner
Riina’s pattern collection is inspired by the Sandudd factory and its printing rollers. The layered designs, unexpected details and versatility come together in a collection where each pattern works both as part of the whole and as a standalone design.
Heini Turunen
Heini’s design brought a fresh perspective to Sandudd’s pattern design and the future of Finnish wallpaper.
Hanna Halme
Hanna approached the challenge through illustration and graphic design, bringing her own distinctive visual interpretation to the competition.
The Outcome
Riina Heinonen’s winning design will be developed for inclusion in Sandudd’s upcoming Finnish Design collection.
The competition continues the vision Sandudd established in 1959: bringing together designers from different generations. Now, a new generation of designers has the opportunity to shape the next chapter in the history of Finnish wallpaper design.

What Did the Collaboration Bring?
The competition gave Sandudd fresh perspectives on what Finnish wallpaper design can be today, along with three distinct approaches to developing its new Finnish Design collection.
At the same time, the young designers had the opportunity to work on a real business challenge alongside Sandudd’s professionals and gain insight into how their design work can progress towards a commercial product and the marketplace.
